Sometimes, I just can’t romanticize the rain pattering outside. No cozy slippers, bread baking, nor hot chocolate is going to cure the absolute doldrums that come for me when the rain persists for days.
Specifically, I’m biased against winter rain. I’ve had my fair share of RomCom kisses drenched in a summertime downpour. I can rejoice in the steam rising from sun-kissed pavement. I’ll even honor a spring shower, knowing it soothes my garden.
But winter rain leaves me feeling somewhere between dull and delirious.
Songs that temporarily removed me from my melancholy
No, these aren’t cute curated indie pop ballads. They are the songs that made me move my body, actively smile, and physically lifted my spirits. Nope, no particular order.
Come Clean - Hillary Duff
If you’ve forgotten, let me remind you that Hillary Duff still could make millions if she would get back in the studio. This banger made me consider *actually embracing the rain.
Hear You Me - Jimmy Eat World
Come Clean should give you major throwback energy. Think: A Cinderella Story circa 2004. That clincher scene on the football field with rain coming in slow, seductive droplets will forever be a core movie moment for me.
Velvet Connection - Moody Joody
I’m new to Moody Joody, but honestly really go for these 80s poppy vibes. I love a forward female protagonist like the character in this song, and have spent an absurd amount of time contemplating just what a “velvet” connection means.
Wonderful Nothing - Glass Animals
Been a glass animal since Zaba in 2014. This one has major main character energy and has been my go-to when I need a confidence boost before a social outing / meeting / moving off my couch.
See Her Out (That’s Just Life) - Francis and the Lights
Yeah, I watched Nobody Wants This. Yeah, I’m pro-hot rabbi. And, yeah, I really needed the urgent reminder of a major climactic scene to beckon me back to Francis and the Lights.
Dare You To Move - Switch Foot
Whether you grew up in a southern Baptist church bubble or not, you know Switchfoot dropped some bangers. This one is a happy marriage of nostalgia and just a good jam.
Teenage Dirtbag - Wheatus
Pardon me while I dig out my skinny jeans and beanie (they never left).
Shine - The Morning Of
My husband put this one on a mixtape he made for me when he was 16. We still belt every word to the absolute terror of our two year old in the backseat.
Mr. Brightside - The Killers
This will always be in my top 5 songs of all time.
Never Let You Go - Third Eye Blind
Heading into a parent teacher conference, I must have been playing this one (a little) loudly while parking. The dad in a huge truck next to me proceeded to sing the chorus while unlatching his child and we both swaggered off past the car line.
I hope these give you a bright spot.
